Patiti Point Beach

I recently took the camera down to the beach just south of Patiti Point in Timaru. The object of this trip was to slow down the action of waves to get some silky smooth shots of the water. Of the 75 shots taken I've selected a few here to give the reader an idea of what can be achieved.

This photo is taken looking south towards Jacks Point. The lighthouse can just been seen at top centre. Jacks Point was the subject of a previous blog.

All these photos were taken using my EF-S 15-85mm lens attached to my trusty Canon 450D. I used a variable neutral density filter and played around in manual mode before some good exposures were achieved. A tripod and remote release were essential items here.

Most of these photos were taken at 4s, f/22 or f/18 and ISO 100. As it was late in the day some nice golden light washed the scene as the sun disappeared and reappeared from behind the clouds.

There are the remains of old piles from a long since used jetty which provided some interesting effects to say the least.

The general scene of the old jetty piles.

I like the next two photos as the waves quickly washed back out leaving a rather misty looking environment. It took many attempts to get the timing right to achieve this effect.

The railway bridge behind the beach.
