Herrenhäuser Gärten

One of the last cities we stopped at during our summer holiday was Hannover in Germany. We took the opportunity to visit the world renown Baroque gardens, Herrenhäuser Gärten ( The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen). Looking at the photos below it is hard to believe that the gardens and famous orchid collection were very badly damaged in 1945 bombing raids.
One of many statues in the main garden.

Large symmetrical avenues of trees and gardens were just recovering after weeks of heavy rain when we got there. The garden staff had their hands full cutting the grass.

Just inside the main gate is the first of many water features. (Note the water isn't turned on until 11.00 am!)

One has to be patient in order to get a photo with as few people in as possible!

Over the road in the Berggarten are the glasshouses. We were astonished when we got to the first tropical house. The display of ferns and other plants is way up there with the very best in the world but the next house we went into was something else. Orchids - WOW! and then lastly the hothouse full of cacti etc.

The collection has over 2,800 different types of orchid kept at a constant temperature of 22 Celsius and 60 - 80% humidity. There are between 500 and 800 flowering orchids on display at any one time throughout the year.

Sorry but there are no names for the orchids here - enjoy!

To add to the magic of this display of orchids there 4 species of finch chattering and fluttering around.

  1. Yet another visual feast. I really enjoyed looking through the photos. My favourite is the last one - the finch. It is a wonderfully expressive photo.
