Desert Sands behind Abu Dhabi

A collection of a few photos taken around Abu Dhabi.  Yes there is lots of sand!!!!

Sometimes the air is full of fine sand when the shamal blows in from the Empty Quarter or down The Gulf from Iraq.

A typical image of sand dunes in the empty Quarter. The colour of the sand is quite different in Liwa to that in Bani Yas, below.

Some areas do have plants, but mostly the desert is lots of sand! Well out from the haze, you might be lucky to get a blue sky like the day Pete and Joy took us out in the late afternoon.

Desert surprises - Sweihan 20 February 2009

Road signs say "Beware of Desert Surprises". We came across these two when driving across the dunes near Swehan.

The area west of Abu Dhabi near the coast is made of of some of the largest sabka flats in the world. The flats are at sea level and often flood when there are very high tides. As the water then evaporates there is a build up of salts and great polygon structure form. Large masses of chert can be found as well as gypsum and crystals of other salts.
